Arizona State Parks
Safford, Arizona
This facility serves as a ranger station, gift shop, and entry control point for Roper Lake State Park. When arriving at the site, the public walks along an exterior accent wall and proceeds through a breezeway that opens to a small viewing plaza. The plaza offers a framed view of Mt. Graham, the highest mountain in the region. Because this view faces the southeast, the architect chose to create this exterior viewing space to avoid potential heat gain of a glazed interior space. The large volume gift shop space has plenty of natural light, although windows are placed where glazed surfaces are not exposed to direct sun. The 8-inch thick floor slab in this space functions as thermal mass to stabilize the interior temperature.
